Tools & Materials Required

Before starting your installation, make sure you have the right tools and materials ready.

  • Grab adhesive
  • Tape measure
  • Spirit level
  • Pencil or marker
  • Fine tooth blade for cutting
  • Chop saw, circular saw, multi-tool, jigsaw or another suitable cutting tool
  • Heat gun for curves or bending applications
  • Cloth or brush for surface preparation
  • Protective gloves and eye protection

For the cleanest cut, we recommend using a suitable cutting tool fitted with a fine tooth blade. This helps reduce rough edges and gives a neater finish when cutting flexible stone panels to size.

Step 1: Prepare The Surface

Good surface preparation is one of the most important parts of installing flexible stone panels. The wall or surface should be clean, dry, dust-free and structurally sound before any panels are fitted.

Flexible stone can be installed onto a wide range of suitable surfaces, including plasterboard, MDF, cement board, existing tiles, brickwork, render and exterior walls, depending on the project and adhesive used.

Before installation, remove any loose paint, dust, dirt, grease or unstable material from the surface. If the wall is uneven, repair or level the area first to help the panels sit flat and bond correctly.

Step 2: Measure & Mark Your Panels

Measure the installation area carefully before cutting. Mark the rear side of the panel using a pencil or marker where cuts are required.

Take your time during this stage. Flexible stone is easier to work with than traditional stone cladding, but accurate measuring is still important for a clean, professional finish.

Step 3: Cut The Panel To Size

Flexible stone panels can be cut using several suitable tools, including a chop saw, circular saw, multi-tool or jigsaw. The key point is to use a fine tooth blade wherever possible.

Cut slowly and steadily, supporting the panel properly as you work. A fine tooth blade helps create a cleaner edge and reduces the chance of damaging the stone surface.

Step 4: Apply Grab Adhesive

Once the panel has been measured and cut, apply grab adhesive to the rear of the panel. This can be applied in vertical lines, a zig-zag pattern or more fully across the back depending on the surface and installation area.

Make sure enough adhesive is applied to create a strong bond across the panel. Pay close attention to the edges and corners, as these areas need to sit securely against the wall.

Step 5: Position The Panel

Carefully position the flexible stone panel against the wall and check the alignment before pressing it firmly into place.

Use even pressure across the full surface of the panel and check it with a spirit level as you go. Make any adjustments straight away before the adhesive begins to set.

Step 6: Working Around Corners & Curves

One of the biggest advantages of flexible stone is its ability to bend around curved surfaces, corners and awkward areas. This makes it a strong option for feature walls, columns, curved counters, kitchen islands and commercial interiors.

For curved applications, gentle heat can be used to increase flexibility. A heat gun can help the panel bend more easily, but avoid forcing sharp bends too quickly.

Step 7: Joining Multiple Panels

When joining multiple flexible stone panels, the visibility of the joins can vary depending on the finish chosen.

Some designs naturally disguise joins better than others. Line Stone styles usually hide joins well because of the pattern running through the product. Travertine and slate finishes generally create a subtle join when fitted carefully. Rough granite styles may show joins slightly more due to the heavier texture.

Where required, a skilled installer can fill or blend the joints to reduce their visibility further.

Interior & Exterior Installation

Flexible stone panels can be used for a wide range of interior and exterior projects.

Popular interior uses include:

  • Feature walls
  • Media walls
  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchen walls
  • Fireplace surrounds
  • Commercial interiors

Popular exterior uses include:

  • Garden walls
  • Exterior feature walls
  • Building facades
  • Outdoor entertainment areas
  • Commercial exterior projects

Always make sure the adhesive and surface are suitable for the environment, especially for exterior installations or areas exposed to moisture.

Common Installation Mistakes To Avoid

  • Installing onto dusty, dirty or unstable surfaces
  • Using the wrong adhesive
  • Rushing measurements before cutting
  • Using a rough blade instead of a fine tooth blade
  • Not applying enough pressure when positioning the panel
  • Forcing bends without using gentle heat
  • Not checking alignment before the adhesive starts to set
